Argument Exercise

My neighbor should be forced to get rid of all the cars in his yard. 1 People do not like living next door to such a mess. 2 He never drives any of them. 3 They all look old (4) and beat up (5) and leak oil all over the place. 6 It is bad for the neighborhood, (7) and it will decrease property values. 8

Argument: Yes
Conclusion: My neighbor should be forced to get rid of all the cars in his yard.
Additional Premises Needed? If you do not drive them and have them look messy, you should get rid of them.
Identify any subargument: 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 are independent and support 7. 7 supports 2, and 2 supports 1.
Good Argument? Yes.

This exercise did help because you take the argument apart and look at what you can use. Identifying subarguments got a little confusing though because it was hard to tell if a claim supported the conclusion directly or not.

  1. I did this exercise as well. I was looking at another students' before yours and my answer was closer to yours. I agree with the subarguments. It is hard to tell sometimes because not all the statements are directly to the conclusion. It kind of leads up to one another in some ways. For mine, I tried switching the order of the subarguments to give it a better flow. It can be a good argument, it just needs to be more consistent and not as jumpy all over the place. We do not need more premises to back it up either. I also got the same conclusion as well.

  2. I think that the subarguments do give support to the claim. Still, I'm not sure that they do give support to the conclusion. It seems like that the subarguments are supporting how it will decrease the property values. Many may argue that how does the old cars affect the neighborhood when the cars are in his own yard. The reason he is not driving the card might be the cars still need to be fix and he is trying to fix the car. I still think that the argument is still kind of weak. Also, since the cars are in his own yard, forcing him to get rid of the car seem to be unreasonable. Since he did nothing to cause trouble for other people. It might not be pretty but he did not create the mess in other people's house or on the public area.
